Post AGM seminar: Metadata for putting historical maps online – a look behind the scenes at maps.nls.uk
We are delighted to welcome Chris Fleet from the National Library of Scotland to talk at this year’s AGM. Chris will talk about putting the Library’s historical maps online.
The National Library of Scotland’s Map Images website currently makes available 150,000 maps, with around 5,000 visitors, and 30,000 page views every day. This talk will look at the metadata and technologies that make this possible, particularly the central role of geographical coordinates in finding maps, as well as the growing value of open standards and web services in presenting maps. What are the main ways that people use to find maps online, how are these relevant to finding and presenting other content based on place or geography, and what is georefencing?
Chris is Map Curator at the National Library of Scotland where he has worked since 1994, with a focus on digital mapping and on making available historical maps online.
