CIG Eforum on Project Management

CIG is pleased to announce the next eforum: We’ll discuss project management on Fri 12 Feb 2016 on our eforum mailing list cig-e-forum@jiscmail.ac.uk.

The topics will include (but not confined to) different methodologies of project management, do’s and dont’s, project organisation and communication, specifics of library and metadata projects, pro’s & con’s of different formal training routes, exit strategies etc. Our co-moderators on the day will be Lynne Dyer (Bibliographic Services Team Manager at De Montfort University Leicester), Dunia Garcia-Ontiveros (Head of Bibliographic Services at The London Library), and Alan Hughes (Head of Access and Public Programmes at National Library of Wales).

‘Crafting a Winning Conference Proposal’ Eforum

Do you ever consider submitting a conference proposal but find yourself not knowing where to start? Have you submitted a proposal previously but want to share/discuss your tips with others? Join us for our next CIG eforum on ‘Crafting a Winning Conference Proposal’. Co-Moderated by Deborah Lee (Courtauld Institute of Art), Claire Sewell (Cambridge University) and Anne Welsh (University College London) the eforum will cover topics such as the benefits of presenting at conferences, getting started with your proposal, choosing a topic and common mistakes to avoid.

Although the discussion is primarily focused on the information world it is open to anyone with an interest in presenting at conferences.

What is a CIG e-forum?

A CIG e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by moderators through the e-forum discussion list.

The e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion.

E-forums are scheduled to last two days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it’s free and open to both members and non-members of CIG.

The eforum takes place on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th of September. On both days sessions will begin at 10am and end at 4pm (UK time).

CIG e-Forum – RDA: Updates and Developments 12th May 2015

A quick reminder about next week’s e-forum on RDA updates and developments. We are delighted that  Bernadette O’Reilly will be our third co-host.

Bernadette is College Support Librarian at Bodleian Libraries.  She is an experienced RDA trainer and cataloguer as well as being a member of the CILIP/BL Committee on RDA.

CIG e-Forum – RDA: Updates and Developments 12th May 2015

Join us for our next e-forum, to be held on Tuesday, 12^th of May. Hosted by Alan Danskin and Thurstan Young (British Library). Gordon Dunsire, Chair of the Joint Steering Committee for Development of RDA, will also be joining in during the day. This e-forum has been prompted by the release of the April 2015 Update to RDA and the recent consultation on future governance and strategy.

The morning session (10.00-12.30) will focus on updates to RDA. How has the April RDA Update affected you? How did you find out about it? Is there too much change or is change too slow? In the afternoon session (14.00-16.00) we will look ahead to future developments. What do you know about the RDA development process? Have you considered getting involved? Does the generalist focus of RDA meet your needs or do you supplement RDA with other standards for “special” materials? This CIG hosted forum will provide a platform to ask questions, share experiences, and give advice.

Update on CIG Rare Books Cataloguing E-Forum

As noted previously the CIG e-forum on rare books cataloguing will take place on 15^th and 16^th April 2015;  the timetable for the event is as follows:

Wed 15th April (10am-4pm)

10-12.30: Routes into rare book cataloguing

2-4: Standards and Provenance

Thursday 16th April (10am-4pm)

10-12.30: Looking at practical examples

2-3: Continue looking at practical examples

3-4: Any other queries?

This will help give some direction to our discussions but the sessions aren’t set in stone, so don’t feel you can’t post something you wanted to talk about if you are only around at a particular time of day.  If you’re posting about something new, then please give your subject header a relevant title so that those participating can keep track of conversations more easily.   We’ll have a lunchbreak between 12.30 and 2, but please feel free to keep posting over this time as well.

The focus for the second day will be on practical examples, giving participants the chance to have a go at creating records for rare books, and the opportunity to discuss the records with others during the forum.

The template and records can be accessed from the CIG website here. You only need to complete those fields and subfields you think are necessary for each title, and please feel free to add extra fields where necessary (e.g. additional 650s).

We hope people will share their records to the e-forum on the day; it is not compulsory to submit the records if you just want to have a go in private, but we would encourage people to do so.

Join us for our next e-forum, to be held on Wednesday 15th & Thursday 16th April 2015. Hosted by the Cataloguing & Indexing Group (CIG) of CILIP, co-moderated by Karen Pierce (Cardiff University), Iris O’Brien (The British Library), and Katie Flanagan (Brunel University) this e-forum is free and open to everyone!

How different is rare book cataloguing to ‘everyday’ cataloguing? What is the route into rare book cataloguing? What skills are needed? What standards do people use?  What do you do with provenance information? Has RDA had any impact on the rare book world? This CIG hosted forum will provide a platform to ask questions, share experiences, and give advice.  Practical cataloguing examples will also be provided, with a chance for people to have a go at cataloguing some rare book examples.

The discussion will allow those who have no experience at rare book cataloguing to ask questions and hear the experiences of established professionals. We would especially encourage anyone who is already working in the sector to participate.

Join us for our next e-forum, to be held on Tuesday 25th & Wednesday 26th November 2014. Hosted by the Cataloguing & Indexing Group (CIG) of CILIP, and co-moderated by Esther Arens from the University of Leicester, Helen Doyle from the law firm Norton Rose Fulbright, and Bernadette O’Reilly from the Bodleian Libraries, this e-forum is free and open to everyone!

CIG is often asked for advice and guidance on ‘how to get into cataloguing’. How do I get the experience to apply for jobs, when I need the jobs to give me the experience? What skills do I need? How do I keep my knowledge up-to-date? Just what are managers looking for? This CIG hosted e-forum will provide a platform to ask questions, share experiences, raise concerns, and give advice.

Topics to be covered include
‘ Recruiting and applying for jobs
‘ Obtaining core skills and keeping up to date
‘ Obtaining specialist skills
‘ Alternative/unusual career paths and other options

The discussion will allow those new to cataloguing to ask questions and hear the experiences of more-established professionals. We would especially encourage anyone who is already working in the sector to participate – managers, team leaders, cataloguers who train, metadata workers with unusual career paths, etc.

CIG Discussion E-forum on Adopting and Working with RDA

Join us for our next e-forum, to be held on Monday 13^th & Tuesday 14^th January 2014. Hosted by the Cataloguing & Indexing Group (CIG) of CILIP, co-moderated by Thurstan Young from the British Library, Katrina Clifford from Kingston University and Helen Williams from the London School of Economics this e-forum is free and open to everyone!

To date, RDA has been implemented by 16 organizations within the U.K. including the British Library & Cambridge University Library. A further 14 organizations plan to implement over the next 18 months. This CIG hosted e-forum will address the process of preparing for RDA. Topics to be covered include:

• business case
• training implications
• technical infrastructure
• productivity
• cataloguing policy

Participants will get practical guidance appropriate to the stage they are at in the implementation process.

The discussion will allow UK librarians and cataloguers to air questions and concerns, and to share ideas and plans.  Whether you feel you are a novice or an expert, we invite anyone interested in RDA to take part – cataloguers, systems librarians, technical services managers, students, etc.  This will be a very useful e-event for everyone considering the implications of RDA.
